While not news for some, it might be for others. Cameras in taxis in Nanjing. Personally I have no problem with it. I have more problems with bull sht drivers than they have with me I think. I welcome the idea of cameras in taxis, although I think very little change will come of it.

I think surveillance of citizens is becoming part of normal life in most modern countries. Example: according to the BBC website, there are up to 4.2m CCTV cameras in Britain - about one for every 14 people.

From that article:
The report coincides with the publication by the human rights group Privacy International of figures that suggest Britain is the worst Western democracy at protecting individual privacy.

The two worst countries in the 36-nation survey are Malaysia and China, and Britain is one of the bottom five with "endemic surveillance".

Conclusion: cameras in taxis in Nanjing? I'm surprised to hear that's a new thing.

I wrote an article about a guy in Japan a few years ago that used to drive through the city using scanning equipment to detect bugs and hidden cameras. When he a found a bank or major business with an infestation, he's offer to 'clean the facility' for a fat fee.

He told me that hidden cameras were in 90% of all hotels in Osaka (even the 5-star ones). I bet it's the same here in Nanjing.

Interesting. Who is it there to protect though? Drivers or Passengers?

I didn't think taxi crime was a big enough problem that such a thing would be necessary. :dunno:

What kinds of problems do you have with bullshit drivers? I foresee myself using taxis much more commonly in my future.

I just realized Nanjing is about the only city in China where I have never been cheated by a taxi-driver.
If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through

Luck of the draw. My son took a taxi from Nanjing Railroad station to Xianlin and the cabbie tried to go via the airport.

not only the camera, there's also a hidden microphone in the meter, they sent the video and audio back in real time, so don't talk important things in the cab!
