What are some things that you didn't know about, or else where wrong about for a long time?
One for me, I didn't know that pickles were made from cucumbers until my mid-20s. Another: I thought for a long time that Brunei was located in the middle east. It isn't. |

When I was a little kid, I though that all Asian people were classified as Chinese.
Me: So you're Chinese, right? Asian kid: No, I'm Vietnamese. Me: Whatever. So what's the deal with Chinese people and rice? You know kung fu, right? Can you show me some moves? Etc... |

After two years working in Nanjing, I finally learned that if you want to call a mobile phone number that is registered in another city using your landline, you have to dial a 0 first. Now I know why I can never reach my colleagues in Shanghai.

I thought table-tennis was invented by an American, while it actually originated as a sport in Britain during the 1800s.

Every time I walked into a shop the Chinese would say "Good morning" to me in a funny little accent. I always marveled at how nice and hospitable it was, that they would reach out to me in my own language.
A year later, I finally figured out they were saying "huanying guanying", which is Chinese for "welcome to our shop." |

One of my students said, "Oh my Lady Gaga" the other day. Just thought they were trying to be funny, but apparently everyone is saying it now:
Check it out. |
