Hot TV: dating show ‘You are the One’

Popular culture

Hot TVRecently, Jiangsu TV station began airing a dating program called You Are The One, or Fei Cheng Wu Rao (非诚勿扰) that has become very popular, even among Chinese students studying overseas, who watch it via the Internet.

The basic concept of the show is that 24 girls will stand in a line, each atop a podium with a light hanging over their head. Facing them is one boy, who will at first secretly choose one of the girls to be his date. Then, he reveals some basic information about himself, after which each of the girls will decide whether he is ‘date-worthy’ or not.

If a girl doesn’t like him, she will turn the light above her head off. If all 24 lights go off, the boy loses. If some lights remain on after the boy’s introduction, the boy may choose two or three of the girls for ‘future communication’. He also has the option in this case to choose a girl who turned her light off.

Finally, with three girls left, the boy will ask another round of questions, after which he will make his final choice. If the girl accepts, they may walk towards each other, join hands, and head off into the sunset for a future date and possible romance.

Candidates are accepted for the show from all over China, and even foreigners are welcome to apply for a spot in order to try their luck.

One sure sign that this show is white-hot is the stacks of comments being posted on message boards all over China.

On this bbs, users give impressions about some of the female candidates. Examples:

I like No.7, she has a style that make me crazy. My qq is 36306712, please contact me.
No.11, could you please treat boys better? Your words are so harsh, who would dare to marry you?
I like the one who runs a hotpot restaurant because she looks like a wife doing everything for her family. Also she has a character like hotpot, direct and sharp but tasty.

On this bbs, some users express sympathy to the losers. Examples:

Oh, this TV show is like torture for all men. Exposed to 24 girls and millions of viewers, they have to act like they are doing a presidential debate.
Those girls are good at destroying self-esteem, 24 girls surrounding one boy? Even that rich boy was pushed so hard and lost face.

Not everyone likes the show however. On this message board, many complain that the whole thing is pre-planned:

That’s totally planned. Most of the girls and boys are actors or students majoring in acting & performance. This show is for those young actors and actresses, just making a promotion for themselves.

Here is the official website of this program: http://fcwr.jstv.com/ and here is the official bbs: http://b1196826.xici.net. On these two sites, you will find heaps of discussions about dating and love concepts. One final example:

Today, there is no war and no massive disaster, so we don’t have heroes. People have started to change their focus to material things, that’s not wrong but we still need a mental core. Love and marriage are extremely important but many youngsters don’t understand.

Maxim, does China have a rating system, which charts the most-watched Chinese shows on a weekly basis? I would be interested to see what the top 5 most-watched shows are.

I'm afraid I can't find 5 because only several provincial TV stations have such program. You Are The One, or Fei Cheng Wu Rao (非诚勿扰) ranks very high without any doubt since you can find comments everywhere.

There was an article in Map magazine about this show. Apparently one of the girls who is a regular on the show got fired because naked pictures of her were all over the internet.

Then she made it worse, by claiming that she was kidnapped and forced to strip and pose. Then it was found out that she wasn't kidnapped, but she had posed in multiple locations at different times with big sunny smiles on her face. So weird.
